Meet The Committee

On April 24, 2011, via a land conveyance from the State of Michigan, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan (SCIT) acquired 8 acres of the former Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, including the Mission Creek Cemetery through a $1 deed. A Phase I Feasibility Study conducted by a working MIIBS group revealed that a majority of Tribal Community members agreed that the land and property needed to be restored. In July of 2011, Tribal Council approved a motion to commence with a Phase II Feasibility Study. This phase encompassed the gathering of viewpoints from Tribal Community members, conducting property analyses, and developing a plan to transform the property analyses, and developing a plan to transform the property to remember the children and reflect the historical significance. Methods used included hosting community events and forums, surveying Tribal membership, and summarizing these findings for presentation to the SCIT Tribal Council for consideration, resolution, and action. The MIIBS Committee was sanctioned by the SCIT Tribal Council in October of 2011 and is charged with continuing the feasibility study work.
